From Abigail Disney, one of our supporters:
Hi all, As you know, Liberia is suffering through the worst outbreak of Ebola in recorded history. Awareness is one of the primary ways to slow and ultimately stop the spread of this horrible disease. The government and large international organizations are doing their best to get the information out, but sometimes this critical information fails to trickle down to the folks in communities.
My team and I have already begun to try and help. This week I got this encouraging message from Mrs. Saydee -Tarr, Executive Director of Gbowee Peace Foundation in Africa:
Thanks so much Abby for this gift as our communities are experiencing a higher infection and sorrowfully, a higher death rate due to ignorance (i.e. lack of information), and the inability to take…the Ebola prevention message into the communities, especially amongst the youths, where disbelief is rife, and in the slum communities where the populations are highest. The community-based organizations are already working with our first donation that will give us the leverage to support community-based organizations and media outreach in dialects in the rural areas.
Leymah Gbowee and Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa are working to support community-based organizations to educate and bring awareness into their communities to prevent the further spread of the disease.
