At a huge V-Day event in NYC, I was surrounded backstage by famous women who were going to deliver powerful stories of other women. But I was most impressed when one performer refused to use someone else’s words. Whoopi Goldberg insisted on telling her story, one she lived. That was talent, courage and true rising. V-Day has been a time for women to tell other women’s stories, stories that jar us and hopefully spur action to improve women’s lives. But the reality is that we must share our stories, which often takes more courage and creates a new tradition of honoring women who remain invisible and removed from the support that energizes one billion rising.
